CHALLENGE: Metal Shark Boats, A manufacturer of all welded aluminum boats for the military, police and recreational customers, needed support with modeling and design for some of their new models of boats. With a full engineering team MSB does most of their own design, modeling and drafting as well as all of their manufacturing. However the demand for new models of boats created an overflow of work that MSB could not handle on their own in the time frame. That’s where WMD Squared came in, MSB needed people to handle the overflow modeling and design projects for their 45 and 27 Defiant models and their 24’ Bay boat.
Having a full engineering and design team, Metal shark already had a full set of procedures and standards that all of their design adhered to and needed people who could come into their system, learn it and provide support up to that standard.
APPROACH: After meeting with the metal shark engineering managers and the project engineers to gain an understanding of the way MSB’s engineering team operates and understanding what they needed help with. The first project was modeling of their 45 Defiant model, a 45’ pilothouse style boat. After beginning the design of the boat our designer went on location to be able to work on MSB’s EPDM server and be able to be in close contact with the Engineering team. After all of the modeling work was done, a full drawing package was created on MSB’s EPDM server.
After the success of this project MSB gave 2 more boats to WMD to support, the 27 Defiant model, a 27’pilothouse style boat which was going to be based off of a 29’ pilothouse model and the 24 Gravois, a 24’ center console bay boat. For the 27 Defiant the hull skins and a reference 29’model were provided to the designers at WMD and options for shortening the boat were explored. After meeting with the engineering team WMD Squared began modeling the new boat. The 24 Gravois was a different challenge in that the boat was already fully designed with surfaces. The surfaces needed to be converted to sheet metal parts and assembled. Once the modeling was mostly complete on both of these boats the designers from WMD Squared went back on location to MSB and finalized the models on MSB’s EPDM system. Once the models were finalized and approved a full drawing package was produced for both boats while manufacturing began.
IMPACT: MSB Manufactured all 3 boats on schedule and is now able to have full models that can be customized in the future for special one-off customer requests and full drawing packages to be able to consistently manufacture quality boats.
